Visit Sangeh Monkey Forest

Although popularly known as the Sangeh Monkey Forest, its actual name is Alas Pala, or nutmeg forest. The trees here are unlike the nutmeg trees you might find in Indonesia’s ‘Spice Islands’. Instead, you’ll find towering trees that can reach heights of up to 30 meters and are hundreds of years old. Within this 10-hectare area, monkeys roam freely – around 700 of them live in the Sangeh Monkey Forest. Other wildlife reportedly sighted here include eagles, hawks, owls, and civets, to name a few.
They are also believed by locals to be the incarnations of the Warrior Princess transformed into the monkeys that inhabit the Sangeh Pala Forest. Therefore, local residents dare not disturb them, as they are considered sacred and sacred monkeys who bring blessings to the people of Sangeh and the surrounding area. Their lives are similar to those of Balinese society, where they have groups (Banjar) divided into three groups: east, central, and west, each with its own leader. What’s unique about their lives is the constant competition among the males: within their group, they compete to become king/chieftain, and with other groups, they compete for territory. The strongest group controls the central group, which has the most food resources.
